Argh!!! I was doing tests and tests, and now I see that since this evening it is actually working as expected! Presumably my admin forgot to reload the apache server after doing the changes. But I do not complain as I am getting the hosting for free :-)
The "solved issue" from the wiki did the trick (aka adding a \/ to the alias directive).
