This afternoon my Dad and I stopped at Montezuma for a couple of hours, and
there was some excellent shorebirding.
We started with the visitor center which is flooded now, and looks good for
shorebirds. Here we had eighteen (18) SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS and four (4)
LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS.
This evening at 1900 hrs., from my yard, I spied 2 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS feeding
in the skies over Brooktondale. Amazing swoops and gyrations against a rosy
sunset glow. I also heard the flight call of an UPLAND SANDPIPER high over
the house. Another hard-to-get Yard bird!

Just heard the distinctive "chip-ee, chip-eee, chip-ee" from the season's first
American Goldfinch fledgling to visit the yard. Doubtless other have been
hearing them for a while, but things tend to be later (and cooler) up here on
the mountain! Soon the air will be full of those relentless begg
Glad everyone has been getting to see the whimbrel.
However, it would be best to park by road and walk in - the supposed "dirt
road" that folks drove on yesterday is actually a newly set drainage tile ditch
and it WAS newly seeded just before folks arrived on Thursday. Thank you.

Also, not surprisingly, the WHIMBREL is still present in the same spot as
yesterday as of 8:00.

Just walked out of my house off Salem Drive in Northeast Ithaca to the
sound of RED CROSSBILLS! I walked around front and saw them foraging in the
line of spruces along the road (on Tareyton Drive). As they flew away to
the south I saw at least nine birds. Talk about a surprise yard bird.
