2013-02-13 Thread John Confer
I presume the same shrike, still at Goetchius on 12 Feb. in tree top near parking/bridge area. It is not always readily seen. I see it near the road on my commute route about 1 out of 6 trips by the Preserve and about 1 out of 3 times I walk around in the

2013-02-13 Thread Jill Vaughan
Seen at 3:30 this afternoon at the end of Cayuga Vista Drive where there will be a new development - I walked the lane (cannot drive in there). The NORTHERN SHRIKE flew in front of me, then landed in the field. I got some fine views as it stayed still a few moments, then moved about in the dry

2013-02-13 Thread bilbaker
Around 4 PM on my way home from town I was stuck behind school bus traffic on Brooktondale Rd. about a 1/2 mile from Rt79. As I was waiting a fairly large hawk flew across the road towards Six Mile Creek. My initial reaction had been Coopers, but the tail was very dark with narrow white bands. It

[cayugabirds-l] Jaunt up the lake

2013-02-13 Thread Susan Fast
Susie I jaunted up the east side of Cayuga Lake and back today. We had a good visit with Fritzie and Becky in Union Springs where a large raft of mostly Aythya was close in. No ice to speak of. Fritzie seems to think that I have a larger scope and can therefore see more. It's not the scope but

Re: [cayugabirds-l] NO. SHRIKE

2013-02-13 Thread nutter.dave
When I first read the subject line, I thought it was reporting the absence of a shrike: no shrike. Then I realized that it was an abbreviation for Northern Shrike. I often think it's worth the small extra effort to write the whole name of any bird in order to be clear, and I celebrate the very

About 11:30am I got a phone call from Melissa Groo, who had gone to Stewart Park in search of the Peregrine. If she doesn't post to the list by tomorrow morning what she told me she saw and photographed, I will do so. For the moment I will just say that Stewart Park is pretty special.--Dave
