This morning in the middle of a downtown snow squall a swarm of birds
descended on my ornamental crab apple. There were about 40 CEDAR
WAXWINGS, 3 ROBINS and 4 STARLINGS. They zoomed around for several
minutes before being scared off by a passing snowplow. Very exciting.

I have never seen a field sparrow at our feeders on N Cayuga, Ithaca, in
the forty or so years I've had them, but Wednesday what I thought was
going to be a chipping sparrow turned out to be a FISP when I got the
binoculars on it. Despite the prominent pink bill I was hesitant to ID
it because
This afternoon I was out enjoying some solitary birding heading down
Myer's Road toward Myer's Point Park and when I came opposite the Osprey
platform on the south side of the road I encountered 4 ospreys (I think
it was 4 although I only saw three simultaneously). They were flying in
circles
My first visit to the woods and jetty road this year found them dry,
compared to last year when I had to wear boots. I did not find much
variety of migrants. Many singing YELLOW WARBLERS and WARBLING VIREOS
but a single BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER and AMERICAN REDSTART.

We've never had a COMMON REDPOLE at our feeders on N Cayuga St but this
year, in late April, we have had a female coming almost daily including
today. We seldom see PINE SISKINs or PURPLE FINCHes but today we had
both. (The siskin has been here several times over the past two weeks.)
I think
At about 3 this afternoon there were 12 wood ducks in Stewart Park on
the south side of the big pond you come to on your left just before you
have to turn right around the one-way circle. Gorgeous. Also one great
blue heron.

I circled the pond on the Wilson trail counter-clockwise (if your are
looking from above I guess.) It was pretty noisy at the start, with
several WARBLING VIREOS singing, a couple of bubbling HOUSE-WRENS, and a
persistent NORTHERN FLICKER going ki-ki-ki On the northern half I
saw one each
About 3:30 the sun came out to give good looks at these two which
foraged ahead of us as we circled the pond.

I went to the Jetty Woods north of Newman golf course this morning from
9 until 11. Beautiful shirt-sleeve weather with no wind. I saw 23
species including 4 warblers. The best for me was a blue-winged warbler,
first time I have found it myself. I spent 15 minutes trying to locate a
