Dr. John Van
Niel Will Lead A Bird Banding Demonstration At The Montezuma Audubon Center

The
Montezuma Audubon Center is proud to welcome Dr. John Van Niel, Professor of
Environmental Conservation at Finger Lakes Community College (FLCC), on
Saturday, February 15 from 10:00 a.m.– 11:30 a.m. for a bird banding
demonstration. Dr. Van Niel has been a bird bander since 1999, working
primarily with song birds. He is an alum of FLCC, he holds a BS from SUNY
Cortland, an MS in Wildlife from Utah State University and a Doctorate in
Education from the University of Rochester. Van Niel's course load centers
around wildlife courses and his field work includes studies with black bears,
river otters, camera traps and passerine birds. 
During
the demonstration, program participants will learn how to safely capture and
handle wild birds, the scientific reasons for placing bands on birds and what
information a researcher can determine from a bird "in the hand".
This program is part of the Nature of Montezuma Lecture Series and is sponsored
by the Friends of the Montezuma Wetlands Complex. Fee: $4/child, $6/adult,
