I had several very interesting encounters with birds in Sapsucker Woods on
Tuesday morning.

* PHILADELPHIA VIREO at the start of the Wilson Trail North and again at the
base of the Sherwood Platform - both very bright birds.

* NORTHERN PARULA with the second vireo.

* NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, MAGNOLIA WARBLER, and a possible MOURNING WARBLER
(bright yellow underside and long undertail coverts) by the lone bench south
of the Sherwood Platform.

* At least five CAROLINA WRENS (a high count for me in the sanctuary),
including two that shared a very little tree with the waterthrush. This was
surely the first such juxtaposition of species I've ever witnessed.

* WOOD THRUSH heard from the lone bench and seen at the north end of the
Woodleton Boardwalk.

* ROSE-BREASTED GROSBREAK heard also from this lone bench.

** A swirling kettle of 85-90 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, found by Jay McGowan from
the knoll by the second staff parking lot, far to the west. This flock
proved oddly ephemeral; instead of rising and drifting south, it seemed to
move west, disappearing from our view behind the treeline and Kip's Barn.
