Prompted by David Gordon's Chimney Swift report from Buffalo, I went over to
check the York school this evening.
Right after I got there, about 7:45 pm, I saw 2 Chimney Swifts flying about
over the chimney. It's possible others may have shown up later, but these were
the only ones I saw. I came back to Geneseo to see if I could see or hear any
over Main St., but I didn't. I would guess they'll show up in the next couple
days - Geneseo usually seems to be a day or two later than York in this regard.
On the way over to the York school I saw a Wild Turkey and heard a Pileated
Woodpecker along Peoria Rd. The Trumpeter Swans were not in the wet spot near
Cuylerville. There was a farmer working in the adjacent field, which would
probably scare anything off of that spot.
Those reporting first Chimney Swift arrivals may want to report them to the
Chimney Swift study folks in Texas:
www.chimneyswifts.org
(e-mail d...@austin.rr.com).
Their web site has lots of interesting material on swifts and their
preservation, as well as North American-wide charting of arrival dates.
