I don't doubt it's used and works, however I've read numerous times that there
are issues with inconsistent behavior in the particular version of IOS they use
in the lab.

That configuration has always worked for me mate.
I have finished a complete lab without using transcoder in the lab and tested
multiple time codec used in the question.
I can assure you that. That a sip phone cme supports multiple codecs without
any transcoder with just voice-class under sip
Specifically SIP phones in CME. You can put the command in under voice
register pool, however it doesn't actually work in allowing multiple codecs.

Are any of you out there using the " voice class codec " command and how are
you using it. Where does it get applied? All the examples I've see always
show g729 as the first preferred codec and I'm wondering why you wouldn't want
the first preference to be g711ulaw?
