https itself isn't a signalling protocol. But SOAP (Simple Object Access
Protocol) works over https. SOAP isn't involved in call signalling , but
helps for the functionality of Presence Feature.
IPPM access URL via http.

So, would https be considered a "signaling" protocol at all?
what about for IPPM ?
sorry not clear how the protocol layering works when https is involved.

things for voicemail.
1) Voicemail server--This uses Unity Connections Visual Voicemail
Web Service
2) Mailstore --- This uses IMAP to connect to Unity Connection.

I think the only direct interaction between CUPC and Unity Connection (for
the voicemail pane in the client) is via IMAP. [And if you're doing this
in production use a recent CUPC, older versions don't support IMAP Idle,
which severely reduces the scalability of Unity Connection].

not sure as just starting with this, but I believe the CUPC, when logging
in, will download the VM profile setup in CUPS, and then use a direct
connection to CUC over HTTPS to access the VM/MWI - whether it uses SIP
(softphone mode) or CTI (deskphone mode) to talk to CUCM.
