It doesn't only sound reasonable, it's *necessary*. It's however not
necessary to do a full blank, a partial or quick one is sufficient.
Blanking and burning with the same cdrecord invocation
I'm not saying it's invald.. I'm saying I THOUGHT it was.. I mean, how many PC
apps (Nero, yadda yadda) do you know do a blank before burning? (I haven't come across
any, although I haven't specifically been looking..)
Me.

I'd disagree about its validity. Blanking a CDRW disc before
writing sounded reasonable enough to me. I always thought
that it didn't work because Linux was buggy.
(About my "Linux was buggy" comment: I started noticing this
after mounting HFS CDROM's started causing kernel panics, and
afterwards
i'm using an external dvd-recoder (liteOn SOHW-832S), and have a lot of
troubles buring DVDs (cds aren't any problem)

I'm running debian/unstable with a 2.6.8.1 kernel and growisofs

fine for DVD+RW media but refuses to do anything with DVD-R or DVD-RW
media with a 'Wrong medium type' error.

Me neither. I know I had tried, and it didn't work, way before 1.0-final came
out. I didn't complain because I figured that it wasn't valid - like you say, doing
two steps at once..
Me.
