I use a notebook running Debian-woody (kernel 2.4.26). Attached to it
via USB is an external DVD writer (LG, GSA-5163D) . DVD+RWs and CDs can
be mounted and read, but writing doesn't work. The software I use for
writing is the binary cdrecord-prodvd-2.01.01-i686-pc-linux-gnu.

hdparm -d1 -k1 -p4 -c1 /dev/hda
The doccumentation for the drive lists it as PIO mode 4 and DMA mode 2.
The listing of the parameters shows:
hdparm -v /dev/hda
