Thanks to everyone for their comments so far.
The "server" in question is a basic 2 node cluster connected to an MSA500.
It runs a variety of applications including Oracle, Apache, Samba, and a
proprietary app built by another vendor.
The hardware is monitored, maintained and backed up regularly
Hi Guys,
I have a client who hopes to keep their server another 5 years making it
10 years old at that time.
At this point there are no plans to add new infrastructure or a new server
to the mix. Their business model is fairly static.
I'd like to see them upgrade. Can anyone suggest specific r
I think backups are important and always on topic.
You could always use Veritas Netbackup. That's what one of my clients uses
with great success. It backups up Windows, Linux and does full,
incremental, restores etc etc all from a nice Java GUI.
It's $$$ but you can't get more Enterprise tha
Hi All,
Here's a strange one for you...
I have a Linux box with a PCMCIA adapter PCI card in it. Plugged into said
card is a cellular modem card.
I can configure wvdial and dial the modem card perfectly. My ppp0
interface comes up and I can ping everything.
I also have a network card on the
Just a quick thought...
If /boot is it's own partition does it have enough free space?

There used to be an RHCE self assessment feature on the Red Hat site. If
you pass that reasonably well you should be just fine to take the RHCE
exams. I took the rapid track exam and passed with no problems.
My advice for the exams would be don't over think the questions and know

Hi All,
Does anyone have any experience connecting two or more DSL/Cable modems to
a Linux box to provide load balancing and failover?
I've done some googling and found a few resources but very few solid
experiences.
I'm trying to optimize my LAN->Internet traffic for a bunch of
workstations.

I've been using ntop with great success.

Hi Guys,
I had a strange problem yesterday and I'm curious as to what everyone
thinks.
I have a client with a Red Hat Enterprise 2.1 cluster. All quality HP
equipment with an MSA 500 storage array acting as the shared storage
between the two nodes in the cluster.
This cluster is configured f

One thought that comes to mind is to upload a file containing the md5sums
of the other files.
Your script would then read the check file and compare the md5sum of each
file with the one recorded in the check file. Good files are

Hi Guys,
I'm 100% sure this is not a Linux issue but I want a second opinion...
I have a Linux server running CentOS. It was been absolutely perfect
without any errors or problems.
Since Monday it has been unable to send email. It is configured to act as
a smart host. All email gets forward

Hi All,
I have configured Samba 3.0.23 to work with Active Directory. Based on
all the tests shown here:

Things are working as expected.
Most machines and users are working as expected.

As William mentioned the easiest way is to format the drive after the fact.
Create an LVM and write it directly onto the drive. Things work great that
way. I haven't tried formatting a raw device.

A couple of follow up questions:
- How much disk space is on the server and how is it partitioned? How many
logical disks in the RAID controller (if any) are made?
- Have you noticed any progr

From a terminal window type:
firefox
If things are set up properly this will just work.
If you want to test general web/internet accessability these commands can
help:
ping
traceroute
wget
