With the CentOS version of mysql, its typically in /var/lib/mysql and
the mysql config file is /etc/my.cnf
after installing the mysql server with
Default data directory is in /var/lib/mysql
You can check also the datadir=? in /etc/my.cnf

These good people backed everything up very well, so the damage was minimal.
