X2go works,
Do you need a full blown desktop? Otherwise you could just tunnel some X11 app
via SSH (eg firefox, virt-manager).

You didn’t indicate whether you are trying to do this on a LAN or across the
public Internet? Classic VNC is not a secure protocol, but there are variations
of it that are secure.
If you just want to run GUI programs rather than fully “screen share,” then you
can use an X Windows client

I've had some issues with the display showing corrupted data depending on
the X server being used. SVGA always seems to work, the latest Intel one
seems fine also.
