I have had no problem at all setting up a 3 node cluster and I currently have
several vm's booting off of rbd as a test.

you need to have a valid and accessible host_bucket key in the .s3cfg
for example:
host_bucket = %(bucket)s.myhostname.com
if you dont have it, it does not allow you to use lowercase buckets
