Boy, I would love it if my family decided to make such a move. Christmas is a
total killer for me as my family seems to grow every year. We've tried in the
past the idea of only doing gifts for the kids, but we just never ended up
sticking to it. And that of course really sucks for me since I'm
We used to do the name draw, but that got expensive becuase everyone was
trying to out-do the other, which prompted a spending limit, and
eventually interest waned. So now I only buy for my daughter, mom,
step-dad and Grannie. I only made one exception this year - when I was

Since becoming an adult, my extended family has frequently sent me cards
letting me know how much was donated where in my name. I think it's
nice. I own enough stuff already, and am picky about what else I want,
so I completely appreciate this.

My family's always had the tradition of only buy for kids.
As for charity, we give plenty and my wife's friend told us they were
giving our daughters present to a charity and we should do the same. I
was a bit insulted as if we needed them to tell us to give to charity
and even which one. So I gave

Gruss, I vote for stick to your guns. It is their choice to be miffed, don't
let it affect you.
However, is it possible to document the JOY you are bringing these other
families with your donation and good will? Is it possible to show pictures
to your family of how giving to others with little or

Our family decided to just do "stocking stuffers" this year. Best
Christmas Ever. There's so much less stress. We've already exchanged
gifts with my parents. My sister and BIL are yet to come. The kids get
more, as Santa doesn't follow our rules. I'm cool with that, though
I'm pretty sure my sister
my mom still sends me a fully stuffed stocking every year.
i love it. small goofy crap!
this year has been a hard one, so all my family know they are only
getting cards.
would love to do more, but just cant afford it right now.

We sponsor 3 families as well, one with a tree, one with food, and one
with gifts for the kids (3 different programs). That is in addition to
Toys for Tots (the Marines _rock_)
As for Christmas, we do swap gifts. This year, some people asked that
everyone suggest a few gifts they really _need_, an

I've been trying for years to change our families tradition of giving
gifts to everyone in the family. I've opted that only the kids should
get gifts (Kids 18 and under). My siblings and I are all older. I'm
the baby at 38. I spend more time after christmas trying to figure
out what I'm going t

that if they get mad, let them stay mad until they get happy.

Just wondering about this year's family controversy which is also an
etiquette problem.
Each year my wife and I sponsor families via a local organization
that screens the families - we get to know names and ages, but nothing
else, which is fine by us. Basically you buy gifts for the family
