Found It,
Having looked there a dozen times and NOT seen it, there is an check box in
the Google Toolbar options marked "Send with Gmail". Unchecking that fixed
it.

Everything I'm reading says that Firefox should tap into your default mail
client OS setting when attempting to open a mail:to link. I can't find
anything that would override that in Firefox itself.so I'm stumped.
Can you upgrade your firefox client? May reset it...? I dunno, reaching.
On 1/1
I think there is a firefox plugin to do with default mail clients, I
seem to remember seeing something like that when I was last browsing
the extensions - no idea what it was called or it's functionality
though :)

In Outlook it is under tools > options > Other, but it is already set.
It is something Firefox specific not an OS option since clicking a mail link
from IE correctly opens outlook but

Upgrade to Adobe ColdFusion MX7

Pop open outlook. It doesn't automatically recognize that it's not the
default mail client, and ask you whether you want it to be?
I use Express, but under Tools|Options|General there is a button for "Make
this your default mail handler".
Sure regular outlook has the same thing.?
On 1/18/07,
Is he using the gmail notifier? There is a setting in that for the
default client.

Unfortunately that was probably months ago and a system restore from 6
months ago (or longer) would mess up to much else.

Tried that, didn't work. Neither did DefaultMail (a utility from
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/defaultmail.htm) in case anyone is going to
suggest that.

Under XP I believe there is a set program defaults either on the Start
menu or the control panel.
Under Win2K you should be able to go to the control panel | Internet
Properties then the Programs tab

Not possible, it was set when gmail popped up a dialogue box saying
something like "would you like to use gmail as your default mail client?"
and he clicked yes. This dialogue box obviously no longer pops up so
clicking no is not available.
