Time permitting, I usually do if the subject interests me and the newbie shows some clue. Telling why you can't ask on a mailinglist helps.

Yah, I don't mind mentoring. I try to answer Oracle questions on
cf-talk, cause I think those are more likely to go unanswered, for
instance (and I know it enough to answer, usually). I tend to do a
fair amount of it for our students in-house. And, hell, I've been
known to send Mr Doom a regex que
I think it's ok to help them out. If they want you to do all the work
for them that's one thing but if they are having a hard time grasping
a concept and you fully understand it then I think it's good to
mentor. I know I wish I had a mentor when I was first starting out. I
still sometimes wish I ha

respond to questions not posted to the list. I used to, but then one

my schedule, I sometimes don't get back to people for a day or two.

Do not feel bad about it. I don't mind being emailed off list but
if your not busy, why not.
you may aid in creating a new cfer
once you feel it is too much, suggest you saw the answer in a book &
promtly supply a link to it on amazon..
