I think you are probably right, that it is the kids vs adults thing.
And also that it is not for the very young. I would imagine it might
cause the average four-year-old to have doubts about his caregiver :)

Actually, I never quite understood the attraction of the books. The
Beaudelaire orphans are being pursued by an evil count, and things
really look bleak, abd the author lost his love long ago, and then..
stuff happens and the orphans are being pursed by an evil count :)
However, both my kids love
