Angel, IIRC there is some funkiness with at least some IE browsers if the

above it. If the browser doesn't find it there, it ignores the DOCTYPE and
stays in quirks mode.

Odd indeed. There's not much there to confuse it. I know with older
versions of some browsers, most notably Netscape, that a TD wouldn't
inherit a font size declared for the body.
If you add a "td {font-size:8pt;} rule, does that help? For
compatibility reasons, I've often set a rule of body, td {
