Supposedly, the trick is LOTS of very thin coats of mud. Spray texture
helps, too. My husband is fairly decent at it now. I totally lack the
patience, though I'm good at hanging it. Taping and mudding is way too
slow for me.

Another trick to a good finish is a really good primer and a couple of coats
of eggshell or flat paint. My brother in law is a pro (20 yrs exp) at
dry-walling and even his stuff can look bad under a high gloss or satin
finish.
