Do not EVER eat fiddle head ferns without cooking them well first. Undercooked ones will make your tongue feel like you are chewing nettles mixed with pop rocks. A few other great "free" foods I often eat while camping: young skunk cabbage, wild asparagus, wild strawberries, of course blueberries
