You are allowed to fund a new IRA for the current TAX year, even if you open
your account in a new CALENDAR year. So if you open a Roth IRA today, you
can fully fund it ($4K) for the 2006 tax year, and begin deposits for
calendar year (and tax year) 2007. So, technically, if you opened an account

I do not know.. I hear always hear about the 4000/8000 max. Maybe you do
need separate accounts. I will find out on June 17th ;-)

I'd agree with you - I've seen nothing about joint IRA's.
I did figure out that my husband can go the TIAA-CREF route, since I'm
elegible. That might just be the easiest way to do it.

Are you sure about that? I think the "I" in IRA stands for "individual", and
your spouse would have to have their own account, in which they could
deposit an additional $4K each year.
I don't think you can have a "joint" IRA.can anyone confirm that though?

I have a Roth IRA through Scottrade. I manage it myself and my IRA grew
14%. Last year was a very good year. I invest in either Exchange Traded
Funds or no-load mutual funds.
I max it out every year, except for 2004 when I was purchasing a house. You
can put in $4000 this year if single and $8,
I have a 401k with The Hartford and a Roth IRA with eTrade. Not enough
actually, but I'm getting there. :)

My wife and I just got going serious on this. We both had 401k's, but that
was it. We both readily admitted that we didn't know enough and this was an
area where we didn't mind paying someone else to help us out. So we got a
financial planner and are happier that we did.
Got started on our Roth's,

I have a SEP set up through Etrade and a Single K set up through Fidelity. Both
offer a lot of different options and many good no-load funds and have good
tools for tracking and researching your investments.
my advice is to go no-load. Seriously. Ameritrade -- well. If you are
convinced that stock x is the way to go. You really want to diversify
as a rule of thumb though, and that means funds usually, especially if
you are not very conversant.

I have what is provided by UK, I pay in 5% of my salary, and they double it.
Half of the investment goes to fidelity the other half to TIAA-Cref and I
manage the funds they are in via the web.
For the most part I am fairly aggressive, but I've got several years before
I retire.
