No, OCR is not the only option. There's a shareware tool I found a few
months back on Download.com that can do this (export to text, I mean). I'll
see if I can find the name of it.

Yes, I just tried it and get a blank .txt. It looks like one of those pdf's
where someone scanned a page, little Xerox like artifacts and the like.

ust a demo of one that costs tons would work; just need this one time.
