Are you connecting to your local box? Thats usually when that message
appears. Are you sure you've got the right connection info entered?

Not in SQL Server Management Studio Express. There is a separate tool called
SQL Server Configuration Manager where you can change your client
network/protocol settings. Make sure you have TCP/IP enabled and that the
port settings match the server's port settings.
