If you've got a free PCI slot, you can add another IDE controller.

Typically, there will be 2 connectors on the mobo or controller card.
Grab a ribbon cable from somewhere else (like your defunct older box)
and hook up the IDE drive on the other connector.
This will also often make the drive read/write faster, as the controller
is forced to operate at the speed o
So all of this makes sense. However - inside my computer the IDE
controller currently has a ribbon going to the DVD burner. The ribbon
has another connector I could hook the drive to - but the ribbon is
too far away from where it would go. I think I'm stuck.

Dude, they have totally different cables. They run off different
controllers. You can add the IDE drive if you have an IDE controller in
the box (my mobo has both).
If you want to boot from it, you'll probably have to change the boot
order in the BIOS.

set it in 'choose' mode I think, which meant it would notice that it
needed to be a slave and would set itself as such.
