I got a really bad case of spyware a couple of months ago. Every time
I went into internet explorer a naked girl wanted my credit card
number. I second the housecall.antivirus.com but if you are still
having problems after all that, I found the forums at spywareinfo.com
to be extremely helpful.

Doesn't look like it. Check your HOSTS file and see if there is an
entry in there for microsoft's domain. Getting rid of that could let
you get to the windowsupdate page.

My Mcafee AV software now scans for "potentialy unwanted programs".
It does pick up stuff that spybot and ad-aware miss from time to time.
Grisoft's AVG might do this as well. AVG is free and Mcafee used to
have a 2 week demo version that you could download. I don't know if
they still do.
