I'd encourage you to take a look at several distros. Ubuntu is by far the most
popular, but it's not neccessarily the best. As a newcomer to Linux some other
good ones to look at are SimplyMepis and Mint Linux. Mint is based on Ubuntu
and SimplyMepis is based on Ubuntu's daddy, Debian. Both sho
+1 generally. I played with desktop Linux for ten years before I was
satisfied enough to switch my desktop environment full time. I finally
settled on Ubuntu, they have done a tremendous job of making Linux
accessible to end users.
I have different systems set up different ways:
- desktop - I ru
Ubuntu Desktop for the OS.
VirtualBox as a virtual machine to install Win 7/XP. It works
especially well if you have a chipset that supports hardware
virtualization, like AMD. You can turn on hardware virtualization in
the BIOS and then VirtualBox can call directly into the hardware for

I would personally still prefer a VM. You can switch faster between
VM images, and run them concurrently. You can also usually access the
host OS
