Dear Pierre et al,
Since we have made a few more tweaks to the carbon cycle names over the
last few days I thought it would be useful to send a full list of the
finalised names:

I think Philip's last email pretty much sums up the position as I

No, that's OK. I think it is still just about comprehensible. :-) I suggested
a different syntax of Y_of_X because I thought the X in X_Y was getting rather
long in that case, that's all.
Best wishes

Hi Alison,
Just wondering, why are the first two variables below named as
"tendency_of_atmosphere_mass_content_of..."
while all others are named as "surface_upward_mass_flux_of_ ..."
Any reason ?
I know the "tendency..." is used for other chemical species... But here
for CO2 variables, I think i
Dear Jonathan and Pierre,
Thank you both for your comments on the CMIP5 carbon cycle names.
Looking back through this thread I think we have resolved all the
outstanding issues and so the following names are now accepted for
inclusion in the standard name table:

Again, OK for me.

Dear All,
I have received some comments via email from Pierre Friedlingstein regarding
the carbon cycle names. I have taken the liberty of reproducing those
comments below.

Dear All,
There is a need to introduce a number of new standard names to describe
the output from carbon cycle models which will form part of the CMIP5
project. The attached spreadsheet lists the proposed name, unit and a
brief explanation for each new model output quantity.
The list of quantit
