Dear Jonathan and Alison,
We also have defined the following "regions" (ocean basins in this case)
for CMIP5:

atlantic_ocean
pacific_ocean
arctic_ocean
indian_ocean

I agree that it makes sense to add the CMIP5 channels and straits to the CF
region list. Thanks.
Best wishes

Jonathan,
I'm fine with contiguous_united_states_of_america or

Dear Jim
Following Don's comment, if you'd be happy with a standard region name of

should agree to that. (We can omit of_america; I would expect people to know

I would suggest the expanded form. Even people within the CONUS don't
know what CONUS stands for. ;-) We use CONUS as a map name in the IDV
and most users have no clue what that is.

I'm happy either way. The acronym CONUS is in widespread use within the

I think it would be fine to give it a standardised region name to add to the
list in

Hi.
I have a need for a region standard_name of "conus". This is for the
contiguous United States. I don't see any other way to specify this region. Can we add
this please?
Grace and peace,
Jim
