I have a 64-bit Adobe CF8.0.1 server on a supported 64-bit Linux O/S and
SetLocale() returns 'English (US)', some other seemingly identical systems
return 'English (UK)'.
And I'd like to know why, so I can make our dev and stage systems say the same
thing :-)

Neither systems are using -Duser in the CF JVM config.
Where else could this be

I understand that a traditional checkbox does not show up on the form if it is
not checked and am quite comfortable with setting defaults and processing it.
But what about an Ajax implementation where the checkbox is used to trigger the
Ajax routine? I have a field defined as:

I don't understand what you mean here. The doing it from CFML should allow the
same range of things as from CFScript, broadly.
Example ?

by default the attribute a binding to form control binds to is VALUE.
since you have value=1 in your cfinput, that's the value it always
returns, no matter if the checkbox is checked or not.
but cf allows you to bind to any attribute! just bind to CHECKED
attribute, and it will work:
cfselect

The comparison isn't between CF and SharePoint, it's between your
solution (which happens to be written in CFML) and SharePoint. If you
want to compare CF against something it'd need to be .NET (which is
what SharePoint is implemented in), not SharePoint itself.

Thanks. I have FTP access to the server so I've been able to work with the

What, exactly, are you looking for?
The simplest form of microblogging is essentially two database tables
(user, message), a handful of select/insert queries, and some basic CFML for the
UI.
That shouldn't take any developer more than an hour, tops.
If you want more complexity than that,
Further IIRC, Sharepoint typically (always?) has a SQL Server DB behind it
and there's no reason why you couldn't touch that DB via CF (at least for
SELECTS)...
