CFSOUTH Speakers ******************* Charlie Arehart - Wireless Possibilities for CF Programmers Synopsis: In this session, popular CFUG speaker and CFDJ columnist Charlie Arehart will introduce CF developers to the many possibilities and challenges involved in developing applications for wireless devices. Rather than focus on the technical and language details of WAP (Wireless Access Protocol) and WML (Wireless Markup Language), which can be learned in any of several resources he'll point out, Charlie will instead show how easy it is to get into using those capabilities to create real applications today. He'll also introduce the tools for getting started and resources for learning more. More than that, he'll identify some of the challenges in the wireless world as well opportunities to use more advanced features. He'll conclude with an assessment of where the wireless development world is going, including other approaches worth keeping an eye on while you proceed with implementation of solutions that can indeed work today. You'll leave this seminar knowing how to create a wireless connection to your site with no cost but a little time and effort, and you'll have a clear sense of how practical it is to rely on this new sort of client connection to your site. Bio: Charlie writes a monthly "Journeyman" column in the ColdFusion Developer's Journal (CFDJ), covering a wide range of CF topics. He devoted two issues to the subject of Wireless development, and he also co-authored the successful book, Professional WAP. He's also been a regular speaker at Wireless developer conferences and seminars worldwide. Many may also know him as a frequent speaker to CF User Groups (CFUGs) and developer conferences throughout the country over the past three years. Greg Bean - WAP/WML Notification Services Synopsis: HTTP is a synchronous architecture in which clients make requests of servers and servers respond with the requested content. This model, although tremendously successful, requires that users seek out information. Over the past few years, the "push" model, where information is sent to the user as it becomes available, has gained widespread acceptance. WAP wireless phone based applications that use such an approach include stock updates, auction 'outbid' notifications, and traffic alerts. This session will review WAP / WML ColdFusion based techniques for addressing such "push" or "notification" tasks. Bio: Greg Bean is the President of Cybergroup, Inc., a Baltimore Maryland based Allaire Premier Partner. Cybergroup has developed a variety of WML applications utilizing ColdFusion including an auction notification plugin for AbleCommerce's AuctionBuilder and a WML store management / shopping plugin for AbleCommerce Builder. Hal Helms - Please Step Away from Your Computer: Managing the Development Process Synopsis: While we approach technical areas with real passion, too often we don't manage the development process prior to coding. But results seem to indicate that usually, the success or failure of a project is determined before the first line of code is written. And judging by the extremely high failure/abandonment rate of software projects (approx. 70% according to two studies done within the last two years), we're not doing such a good job. The problem is "requirements gathering". The truth is that clients almost never know exactly what they want--until they see it. Usually, though, the first time they see it is when the application is delivered--when, in other words, it's too late to do much with their feedback. The key to success lies in involving the client early and often using tools such as wireframes and prototypes. A set of best practices has emerged that can help us make sure that the entire project -- not just our code -- is world-class. Bio: Hal Helms is a Team Allaire member who splits his time between Atlanta and Tampa. He offers training and mentoring in Fusebox and ColdFusion development. He is currently writing a book on ColdFusion for Prentice Hall to be released in February of 2001 and is a regular columnist for "ColdFusion Developer's Journal". Matt Liotta - Introduction to CF Espresso Synopsis: CF Espresso is a broad framework to develop and maintain complex web applications. It provides application developers with network, system, and application architecture, a development methodology, and a maintenance framework to address common web application problems, such as scalability, extensibility, continually changing functionality, and code reuse. It can scale with your development team and with your customer load, both vertically and horizontally. While focusing on ColdFusion as a development platform, CF Espresso can integrate code written in many other programming languages. CF Espresso is flexible enough to withstand the continually changing functionality needed of web applications today without redesigning most of your application. Finally, this framework requires modules to be implemented as components thus encouraging heavy reuse of code. Bio: Matt Liotta started his development career by building C applications for faculty at Emory University when he was only twelve. He built his first web page soon after Mosaic 1.0 was released. Excited by early web applications, Matt saw the potential to replace legacy client server applications. At Emory University he built an enterprise calendaring system, the faculty poster project, a Y2K compliance tracking application, and a prototype for an electronic research administration system. Since then he worked with an early ASP, Cignify, to build their transaction processing system for payroll time data. He also built a code distribution system for Consumer Financial Networks. He designed the first online account management system for Grizzard Communications. Before joining TeamToolz, Matt did consulting around San Francisco for companies such as Williams Sonoma, Yipes Communications, and gMoney. Matt now enjoys his role as TeamToolz's architect.
