IE7 does just fine with alpha channel transparency in PNG. IIRC, IE6
handles single colo

IE6 doesn't handle transparent .png files well. I'm not sure about IE7.
Last I looked (and this was a year or so ago, so it could have changed)
there was a website or two out there that demonstrated IE's inability to
correctly handle .png files.
