For what it's worth, I tried merging of these "corrupt" PDF docs with the CFPDF tag on my CF8 test box and it worked fine. Apparently it is a bug in Lowagie, or cfpdf ignores the error.
Interestingly enough, there is a stoponerror attribute of that tag, but it can only be used when merging an entire directory of PDFs.
