Session variables in CFMX need to be locked if you might have more than one request changing values in the same session variables at the same time. Since session variables are user-specific, this is often pretty unlikely. Locking session variables using CFLOCK has nothing specifically to do with CFTRANSACTION, which lets you lock database access. In general, you should avoid any unnecessary operations within any sort of lock, as locks create bottlenecks within your application.
