I've run into the same problem. Verity will index a .PDF, and it will not show a summary, nor return it in a search unless a blank strin is passed to the search. Usually the culprit is a .PDF which was created out of an image (and does not contain any actual text). Though, you say you can

I seem to recall that the problem was with PDF's created with Acrobat 5.
Something related to Adobe changing the format slightly, perhaps including
some unicode data in the new format. It's been a long time, though, so you
