Does anyone know the correct color/finish for the
hood hinges on a '68 Chevelle? I've seen them satin black, gloss black,
and "cast grey". I'm not sure what color they originally were

My 68 El Camino (which has been in the family since new, and unmolested),

Kevin, The hinges and springs were natural
steelcolor. GM used a phosphate coating. Most people seem to paint them.
If you want the natural look try sandblasting them and paint with a satin clear
coat. I like using Eastwoods silver cadnium paint, but this is not
correct.

Mike,
I hear "phosphate coating" often. Is it possible to
buy and apply a phosphate coating on your own, or do you have to take it to a
plating shop?

Different Mike here.
The phosphate is actually a zinc pfosphate product.
I have a gallon from Eastwood. I use it in a spray
bottle with repeated coats. Don't get it on you or the
cement. I also used a Mr. Rust product. It's a handy
product because you can spray a small cloth and wipe
it on
Thanks for the help. 78 403 Toronado is what I will go with.

71 front seats will interchange with 69-72
Chevelle, LeMans, Cutlass, GTO, and Skylarks. This is for the frames and
padding, the seats will need to be recovered in the 71 Chevelle style
cover.

You can phosphate coat at home. Dupont has a two
part system that works pretty well. 5717S is first used to clean all the rust
and dirt from the part them 5718S is the phosphate coating. It's a dip type
coating, no special tools needed. It will resist rust but not prevent it.
Much like the
Don't sandblast them if you want a natural steel
look. Sandblasting changes the look of the surface, dulls and
roughensit. Glass beading isn't quite as abrasive. Sandblasting also
affects the integrity of the spring.

lol,,
Take the bottom out again. Look at the latches on the floor. Make
sure they are not bent and don't have debris in the way. Put the seat
back...hold up slightly on the front and push back...get the frame in
the slot as you lower the front..
from time to time mine has been a pain...now
Thanks!

I brazed a copper drain tube into the bottom of my rear window well. Ran the tube thru the floor it drains to the ground. You could do something similar in the bed.

I don't actually sandblast, I glass bead. And yes
it will look slightly different but will not damage the springs. One other small
detail that works well, I hook the springs to a comealong and stretch them open
enough to get the paint/sealer in between the coils so when you open your hood
