Hi Steve,
Thanks for your input- Actually, he's just recently
gotten a new radiator and shroud I believe. I don't
know about the pump or the fan though.
I'll see if I can get more info. Thanks to all of you
for your input!
Regards,
Jim

I don't know about vacuum, but if it cools down when running and overheats

Sounds like a fan and shroud issue to me. Of course contributing factors
could be reduced flow through the radiator for various reasons ..bugs,
fins
Thanks Clint and Herb,
I am back on the road ,running as cool as a cucumber. Cheap Chinese
thermostat was the problem.Changed all the hoses anyway.

Make sure the hoses aren't collapsing. When was the last time you flushed

Just because the thermostat isn't very old doesn't mean it isn't bad. I had
the same thing happen to my 91 Chevy truck the weekend I went to get my 69
Elky. The thermostat in it was only two months old

I have never had a problem before with my car over heating, now after
driving down the block large amounts of steam spewing from over flow
vent. The thermostat is 6 months old the hoses look o.k.
Does anybody have any idea how i can diagnose the problem
thanks

iator than the fan could pull. Spinning the fan faster
certainly helps at idle cooling issues (like in traffic in Phoenix during
the summer).

Also make sure that your fan clutch is good. A bad clutch can make the fan
turn slower too.

Try a smaller pulley. It will make the fan spin at a higher RPM for better
cooling.
Also, if you don't already have a fan shroud, get one. Same applies to lower

more thing to consider... For every old car I've bought, the first
thing I do is pull the radiator and take it to a local rad shop and have
them disassemble, rod out, reassemble, and pressure test. So far
every radiator has had some blockage, usually from 2

Could be belt slippage or, as I've had happen to me,
the lower hose collapses at higher speeds making the temp shoot up. When
the engine slows back down, it opens up again. Check the lower hose for

The thermastat & radiator cap are legit
problems. I've seen both happen in the past. But I too would bet on the hoses

I have a '69 chevelle and I replaced the radiator about a year ago. It has been working great up until about a few weeks ago. When I am driving on surface streets, it runs at normal temps but when I get on the freeway it seems
