I used to sand off the old paint, now I strictly take them in and have them
bead blasted, this way you don;t grind off any metal, or change the shape
of any body lines and do not create excess heat.

it should take that long.
Used 60/80 grit with theses 2 tools :

I sanded my 69 down using 80 grit and a DA sander. If you want to do it right, I suggest taking it down to bare metal. Here is a link to my website, there is a link on there to my 69.
