What is the backspacing on a 15X8 steel corvette rally wheel? I
think I remember it being 4.5". Right now, I think I'm running
a 255 with just enough outer wheel well clearance that I can stick my
hand in there. Tons of inner well space though.

A 15x8 wheel with 4" backspace will not be centered
in the wheelwell. Anything larger than a 235 tire will most likely rub. If the
wheel had 4.5" backspace, you could easily run a 275 tire. Still want 4"
backspace?

They probably are in a completely stock
application. However,it's best not to assume anything.

A car's wheelwell doesn't know what size wheel
you're using but the total width & diameter of the tire & wheel combo.
But to answer your question,15" wheels will give you a much greater tire
selection than 14" units.
1964-67's can handle up to a 285-width rear tire
and 68-72's can handle up
. Just guessing.

You want to try to center the tire & wheel
combo you're using, in the wheelwell. A common size used on A-bodies is a 15x8
wheel. An 8" wheel is actually closer to 9" wide, measured from outer lip to
outer lip. Half of 9" is 4.5". So,zero offset on an 8" is actually 4.5"
backspace,not 4". Offs
Clearance issues are almost always caused by
improper backspacing. Since cheaper wheels are usually one-piece
construction, that really limits their backspacing options because a different
backspace will require a new wheel casting. This wouldn't have been much of a
problem if the wheel manuf
