I have always gave the wheel a spin and tighten until
you make the wheel just come to a stop. then back off
the castle nut until the cotter pin hole lines up and
your good to go.

spindles. Trailer will be similar. As I recall, tighten them to (for
example) 12-15 ft lbs (inch pounds??) . Then Back off the nut just
enough so you can insert the cotter key. You want to apply enough torque to
