Looks like nobody else answered your question so I thought I'd at least respond.  I've had 5 67 SS's, all with 4-speeds.  Wise or not, the first thing I always did was toss them out in favor of a Hurst.  Muncie shifters were notorious for being "loose" if I remember correctly.  If you really want to keep the resto look, you can adapt the Muncie tower to a Hurst shifter.  Visit http://www.dalesplace.com/htm/stuff/muncie_to_hurst.htm for an article on just how to make the simple bracket that will allow this.  The *only* thing you lose is having to pull up the lever to get to reverse.
