Les, Do you have vented covers? If not the crankcase pressure can cause gaskets to leak. I use old style cork gaskets with a light coat of weatherstrip between the gasket and valve cover. I put the weatherstrip on lightly and install the gasket and valve cover with light bolt tension to allow

I always make mine out of clear silicone.  I put a 3/16" bead and let it set up a while.  Then carefully install using a nut driver.  I also install 1/4" studs to guide the valve covers so they don't smear.  I never had a leak.  Wipe the excess off and your done.  Works for me with my stock
