Les, Do you have vented covers? If not the crankcase pressure can cause gaskets to leak. I use old style cork gaskets with a light coat of weatherstrip between the gasket and valve cover. I put the weatherstrip on lightly and install the gasket and valve cover with light bolt tension to allow

I always make mine out of clear silicone.  I put a 3/16" bead and let it set up a while.  Then carefully install using a nut driver.  I also install 1/4" studs to guide the valve covers so they don't smear.  I never had a leak.  Wipe the excess off and your done.  Works for me with my stock

Metal or aluminum? I've painted engine parts with Krylon or other rattlecan paint and put them in the oven to cure for a few hours at low temps (200 degrees or so). They still look good,years later. If an engine gets hot enough to burn the paint off,you are going to have bigger problems than
