It happens to me, too.
My proxy server is SQUID.
IE7 and FF and chrome 1.x have no problems.

Can you tell me more about the proxy server? Is it IIS? Does it expect
authentication?

I have just removed the old Chrome and done a clean install. The new Chrome
does not
have the problems with the proxy and I can access gmail, albeit a lot
