First the Feds tortured him - causing continual pain over years. This is similar to how Peter McWilliams died. Peter died choking on his own vomit. Both Steve and Peter McWilliams (not related) were forbidden from using medical cannabis while out on bail awaiting trial for growing medical cannabis for themselves and others. With high bail at risk, neither could risk using cannabis for their pain. So the Feds and Big Pharma (due to the side effects and the lack of effectiveness of the Big Pharma drugs they had to use instead of cannabis) effectively killed them both.

Med Pot Activist Dies, Medicine denied

POT
proponent dies

http://www.sdcitybeat.com/article.php?id=3339

CityBeat was deeply saddened Tuesday morning to learn that Steve McWilliams, a long-time San Diego medical-marijuana activist, had died earlier that day. Friends said it was suicide.

McWilliams, who had to cease using medical marijuana after a 2002 arrest, suffered from chronic pain and was likely facing prison time after being charged by federal prosecutors three years ago with possessing 25 marijuana plants. A Supreme Court ruling handed down last month said that federal law prohibiting medicinal use of marijuana trumps California’s voter-approved Compassionate Use Act.

CityBeat has been a supporter of McWilliams and his cause since the paper began three years ago. He was an activist in the best sense of the word, encouraging medicinal-pot users to stick to city guidelines and state law and form cooperatives so that the most ill folks would have a community to support them. More than that, he was a genuinely kind-hearted person, and we will miss him very much

OMG that is so terrible and sad. The pressure of police harrasment and persecution seems to have gotten the better of him. This is not the way it's supposed to go. I'm sure that the cops have no remorse what so ever.

Aluhlooyah interviews Steve McWilliams from Shelter From The Storm, a Medical Marijuana collective. We go over the recent supreme court hearings, his legal battles to legally distribute "pot" under Ca.'s prop. 215, and the stupidity of the drug war in general.

SENTENCING SEASON: ROBERT SCHMIDT GETS 41 MONTHS. July 13, 2005. Anderson Valley Advertiser.
http://www.mapinc.org/drugnews/v05/n1106/a06.html?92639

From the bottom of the article:

Quote:

As we go to press word comes word that San Diego organizer Steve McWilliams has taken his life. McWilliams, 50, was a tough guy, a former cowboy who used cannabis to cope with excruciating migraines His friend David Bronner emailed on Tuesday, after hearing from Barbara MacKenzie, Steve's partner: Steve committed suicide by overdose late last night/early morning. Steve had been depressed and in terrible pain, and been hospitalized last week. Steve's depression was apparently a combination of dread of going to jail in light of Raich and his deteriorating health. He had had to take powerful pharmaceutical opiates, anti-nausea, anti-migraine, etc. drugs in far higher amounts than when he was able to medicate with marijuana, and evidently was what he used to overdose.

"Steve was an incredibly kind, compassionate, intelligent and wise man, as well as a balls to the wall activist. He inspired me and many others, and will be dearly missed. I was proud to know him and be his friend.

Steve will be cremated and flown back to his family in Colorado." A memorial service is being organized. There will be a gathering at Police Dept. Headquarters on Wednesday 7/13 to protest law enforcement hounding Steve McWilliams to death.

The article gives an excellent overview of the status of upcoming trials and sentencing of medical cannabis patients and growers.

It seems that if you have nothing to trade, you could get long mandatory sentences of 10 years to life if more than a hundred plants are involved.

This is very relevant to Renee Boje.

1 kilo is equal to 2.2 pounds.
1 kilo is 1 kilogram, which equals 1000 grams.
1 pound equals 454 grams. 1 ounce equals 28.35 grams.
A gram roughly equals a single packet of sweetener.

The federal sentences above are for NON-VIOLENT possession only. Similar laws exist at the state level. One must serve 80% of the sentence before parole is even considered. 1 gram of powder cocaine is turned into 0.89 grams of crack. Per capita use of crack is higher among whites than blacks.
