Liberty Dollar proponents vow to resist government crackdown

An attempt to buy beer at a Buffalo Sabres game using silver medallions known as Liberty Dollars landed two Derby men in trouble with Buffalo police last December. Now the federal government is warning people all over the United States that the medallions are "not legal tender" and that using them as money is a federal crime.

Despite "their misleading appearance, NORFED 'Liberty Dollar' medallions are not genuine United States Mint coins," the U.S. Mint said in a press statement issued this week. "Prosecutors with the Department of Justice have determined that the use of these ... medallions as circulating money is a Federal crime."

The government's strong words drew a perplexed reaction Friday from the attorney for the two Derby men and a defiant reaction from a Hamburg man who is the executive director of the organization that produces the medallions.

"We don't doubt the legality of this, despite the government's accusations," said Michael Johnson of Hamburg, executive director of the Indiana-based National Organization for the Repeal of the Federal Reserve Act.

The government "is absolutely not going to stop us."
