You must use a "straight" cable if you're connecting pc/router/etc. to a hub/switch. And you definetely must use a "crossed-over" cable to connect a pc/router to another pc/router and hub/switch to another hub/switch. Some hubs/switches/routers may let you change manually the role of the port
