Yes it is entirely possible. It is most often used to conserve cabling
between a wiring closet and office areas: The contractor runs one Cat 5
cable from the wiring closet patch panel to a shared office. At the wiring
closet a custom made patch cord connects the patch panel to two ports on the
building switch. A similar patch cord at the office branches the wiring to
two PCs. In some cases the phone and data connections are combined on one
Cat 5 run (best done with digital phones that do not have to carry the ring
voltage). Belden even pushes a Cat 5 cable that has one of the pairs
optimized for video signals.
Now that we know it can be done, let it be known that it is not recommended.
Since Cat 5 is unshielded (making the costs lower) some cross-talk will
occur on anything that goes over the cable. There will be some interference
even though it is minimal in many cases. Also there are extra wires incase
the installed wiring happens to have a bad pair that should be swapped out.
Departing from the standard Cat 5 wiring/patch construction also saddles you
with keeping track of all the non-standard patch wires. It is a classic
case of 'penny wise and pound foolish'.

in normal cat5 ethernet, 4 of the 8 wires are used correct ?
if this is the case, would it be possible to have 2 physical links over
the 1 cat5 cable.
as in in 2 rj45's coming out of each end of the cat5, thus making 2
network connections over the 1 cable. anyone no if this has been done and
how it worked, or if it cant be done, and why :) ?
