Sorry Man,

The 4000 series kicks the 5000 series ass. The 4003 has a 24Gbps backplane
and the 4006 has a 60Gbps backplane verses the 3.6 in the 5500. The 5500
only gets a 3.6 backplane if you have a sup3, if you have a sup 1 or 2 you
only get 1.2 backplane. Don't depend on outdated course material to make
customer decisions. ALWAYS CHECK CISCO'S WEB SITE!! The 4000 series also has
a Layer 3 module to do your interVLAN communication (WS-X4232-L3).

According to The Cisco Press Study guide the 5000 series is the "recomended"
switch for the Distribution layer. It houses the MLS-SE III and the NFFC and
can handle internal routing as well via the RSM. The 4000 however (and this
is right outta the CP Book page 415) "is an extension of the 5000 series
family of Switches. It is designed for mid-range wiring closets with fewer
than 50 users. The 4000 is a three-slot chassis with two slots available for
line cards and one slot for the Supervisor Engine."

So in answer to your question, the 5500 is the optimal switch for what your
describing as a user base!
