1720 w/VPN module and VPN client

We are trying to setup a 1720 w/VPN module, Firewall feature set, and Cisco VPN client software in a "secure gateway tunnel" mode. The questions I have, is will we need the 3DES feature set also? And can we used a "preshared key" instead of certificates? _ FAQ,
